Draženka,
yes, more or less that's what it is all about. I.e. I wrote this because I finally discovered that Beč is Wien and I found the name Beč interesting and I also thought that it sounded Hungarian somehow. And then I asked about the meaning of the word and you are now bringing the answer to that question and some additional for me very interesting information about toponyms that contain this word. Thanks a lot! You know that I like to think about such things.

Ida,
Londi gillar dig också som du såg.

I wonder what the whole discussion was about, why Hungarians and Croatians call Wien Bécs/Beč?

I found this on one of the forums:
Bécs (Avar origin) = guarded area/place/earth fort; encircled place (earth fort) for treasures

Today it means ’treasure’, ’value’ in Hungarian. (<= becs)

similar toponims in the Carpathian Basin:
- Óbecse, Bečej (Vojvodina/Serbia)
- Nagybecskerek, Zrenjanin (Vojvodina/Serbia)
- Becsehely (Zala county, Hungary)
- Becsvölgye (Zala county, Hungary)
- Tiszabecs (Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county, Hungary)
- Szamosbecs (Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county, Hungary)
- Becse (Veszprém county, Hungary)

Tack så mycket! :) Och det var trevligt att träffa Londi, han är jättevänlig :D

Hm... Jag tycker att det är bara det ungerska namnet för den där särskilda fästningen, eftersom på ungersk Wien heter också Bécs.

Tack Ida,
vet du kanske om Bécs betyder något på ungerska? Eller betyder det kanske fästning helt enkelt? (PS Det var fint idag vid Bundek. Tack!)

Gunnar,
č i Beč uttalas ungefär tsch (jag hittar inga användbara foneteska tecken att stoppa in här).
