That’s a long story, so in a way the catalpa could be said to be an indigenous European tree.

I found this:
Although fossil records show that this tree existed in Europe sometime between 65 to 1.8 million years ago, it wasn’t until the 1720s that Catalpa seeds were grown again in Britain, thanks to Mark Catesby, an Englishman, who introduced the first wild specimens to gardeners in England and America.
Common names today for it are the “Cigar tree” and the “Fish Bait tree”.

So we could have asked each other yesterday evening and we would both have known the answer!

I found out that it originally is a North American tree, but I was too lazy to look for how and when it got to Europe.

I like the name cigaraš.

How strange that you wrote about this tree now! For the past few days I was asking everybody which tree this was, nobody knew the name. Thank God for the Internet, I managed to find out. Yes, catalpa, and Croatian version is ”cigaraš”, because of the pods on the trees.
